Custom typography

Letters designed to belong to one brand only.

Twelve Moons creates wordmarks, lettering and typographic systems when an existing typeface cannot carry enough of the brand’s character on its own.

What the work can include

A distinctive voice built into the letterforms themselves.

01

Wordmarks

Custom-drawn brand names designed for recognition, reproduction and the applications they must work on.

02

Lettering

One-off typographic compositions for packaging, campaigns, titles or limited product editions.

03

Type direction

Typeface selection, hierarchy and rules that give a brand a coherent typographic character.

04

Product systems

Typography adapted across variants, sizes and information levels without losing clarity or personality.

Process

A clear route from first conversation to final files.

  1. 01

    Define the character

We identify what the typography needs to communicate and where the result will actually be used.

  2. 02

    Draw the direction

Selected sketches establish the construction, rhythm and distinctive details of the letterforms.

  3. 03

    Test the forms

The design is checked at real sizes and on the applications that reveal legibility and reproduction issues.

  4. 04

    Prepare the assets

Approved lettering or wordmark files are organised in the formats required for brand and production use.

Before we start

Useful answers for a first conversation.

Is custom typography the same as designing a full font?

Not necessarily. A project can be a wordmark, a limited lettering set, a packaging alphabet or a more extensive type system.

Can lettering be added to an existing identity?

Yes. Custom type can become one distinctive layer within an otherwise established brand system.

Can the work be prepared for packaging production?

Yes. Lettering and wordmarks can be supplied as scalable assets and tested on the relevant packaging formats.

How is the quote prepared?

The quote depends on the number of required characters, applications, language versions and whether a complete font or limited asset set is needed.

New project

Start with the word the brand needs to own.

Send the brand name, intended applications, languages and any technical limits. We can then define whether the right answer is a wordmark, lettering or a broader type system.
